To Copy or Not to Copy
10.30.06 (4:35 pm)   [edit]

Computer crime is on the rise as new technology enters the market and facilitates such crimes. Surely, the most common computer crime is copyright infringement: starting from the copying of texts and included in one's own works without the prior consent of the author; and ending with the copying of CDs.

Students are using more and more the internet for their assignements, meaning that most of the work produced would be others. Nowadays teachers have special tools which identify any copied part of an assignment.

The copying of CDs, DVDs, music and video files, software etc. seems the more concerning issue though. The internet facilitates such acts. Piracy occurs since most people are not willing and/or able to pay for the original ones. On the other hand artists cannot lower the price of their productions because of the money lost due to piracy. So here we can observe a vicious circle.

Therefore, unless artists lower their products' selling price at such a point whereas it will be cheaper than downloading or copying it, piracy will continue.

Amnesty International Calls for Freedom of Speech ...
10.27.06 (9:17 pm)   [edit]

Amnesty International, which is is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights, has pledged for online freedom of speech. This campaign is targeted mostly at bloggers who are encouraged to express their thoughts and beliefs through their public spaces.

Steve Ballinger of Amnesty International said, "Freedom of expression online is a right, not a privilege - but it's a right that needs defending", to which I fully agree.

So why have I taken some of my time to write this post?

First of all to show my approval and my solidarity with this campaign. But also, to pose a question to which Amnesty International have not answered: "If I do write about suppressing people's rights in my blog would it still be approved by Amnesty since I am using the right of free speech?".
