Oh yes! Oh no, I mean. As a Maltese it is very disappointing that we hit rock bottom for the third consecutive year in the Eurovision. Malta failed again in qualifying to the final.
Many argue that it is due to politics, neighbourhood points exchange, lack of reputation etc etc Bluff! Malta might not have won the Eurovision, but it went close with Mary Spiteri, Ira Losco and twice with Chiara. Where they just coincidences? But, having the same artist going twice a hairline away from winning it - Chiara must have almost found a winning formula. What about those who say that we should pull out of the Eurovision? I tell them: if you don't like it ... go to hell ...um sorry ... just don't watch it :P
If we take their argument, that since we are not successful we don't take part as it is just a waste of money ... I ask them what about sporting events? Malta is most of the time rock bottom, sometimes humiliated. Should we pull out of them? The answer is no ... a big bold NO. Eurovision has become part of our culture - it is a date on every Maltese calendar. They should make it a public holiday - just joking (though I would love such an idea). It's an opportunity for singers to make a name out of the country. Few manage to, but it's still an opportunity.
I am no expert in the area but I have to admit that the way Malta's entry has been handled in the last few years has not impressed me. Promotion for the song has either greatly diminished or I'm turning deaf. To get a result you must work hard and sweat. I have no idea of the budget being allocated - but I'm sure it could be better used. To go around Europe, you don't need A Class seats on an Airplane and 5-star hotel bookings. You just need a caravan! Don't you see? Travelling from end to end of Europe using a Caravan, making stops in villages to give a FREE concert handing out FREE CDs of the Song. Crossing through borders. Going on radio and television shows on the way. Anyway, I'm not the chairman. He knows best not me. Who am I to suggest him?
Just to let you know that I'm not an avid fan of Eurovision, but still think that we should keep our foot in it.
