Taking a Peak at the Future: Playing with DNA
07.21.08 (10:33 pm)   [edit]

Scientists are getting a greater understanding of biological processes and how to manipulate them - even the most basic of components which makes me and you human beings: the DNA.

In fact, such advances are enabling scientists to come up with personalized medicines, ilness detection and disease eradication. And this seems only to be the beginning as it is thought that further advancements in this area will enable humans to reverse ageing, replace the older organs with new ones produced from one's own DNA and genetically engineer unborn children.

This is thought to lead humans into an uknown and dangerous territory, where genetic descrimination prevails and a new definition of the word "human" might have to be formulated.

This leads to several questions: Is it ethical to alter one's own genetical make-up? What are the risks? Should there be a limit? And by which means or by who will be this limit defined?

Interesting News for Week Ending 20/07/08
07.20.08 (4:40 pm)   [edit]

A Scottish Scientist accidentally set his neighbours' garden on fire, as he was trying to just burn some weed in his own garden. The 79-year old Robert Gailey was using a little blow torch to quickly dispose of the unwanted flora.

But the blow torch started to emit sparks, which lead to the neighbours' garden emblazement. Despite of his age, Gailey immediately tried to put the fire out - in vain. Instead, fireman were called on the scene to resolve the mishappening.

Some people's problems seem to be endless - this includes an Australian carrying the name of Michael Leary. The latter has been brought to court charged with driving under alcohol effect - for the seventh time!

The man under accusation confirmed that he has a problem with alcohol, spending up to €600 on beer every week! Leary's problem developed around 5 years ago when he was dumped by his then girlfriend. He turned to alcohol to ease his emotional pain.

Despite this, the Magistrate decided not to send Leary to jail as the latter has stopped drinking after his last appearance in court.

A couple from New York has taken a zoo to court demanding $10 million, having gone through great emotional distress while taking one of their rides.

Damien Foster and Nandi Taylor took what is called the Skyfari Ride - a gondola which takes you around the zoo. A malfunctionment of the ride lead to the couple's cabin to stop - right over a bunch of lions. They took quite a fright and are saying that this has badly affected them both psychologically and emotionally.

One must also mention that during the time of happening, Taylor was pregnant. They are bringing forward the argument that this trauma negatively affected her pregnancy.

Miss USA seems to be reflecting the fall of her country of origin, as she herself slipped and fell during the prestigious beauty contest: Miss Universe. This year's edition, won by Miss Venezuela, was held in Vietnam and was followed live by an estimated one billion people.

Miss Stewart seems to be following the footsteps of last year's Miss USA, Rachel Smith, as she too had slipped and fell on stage.

And don't judge a book by its appearance seems a suitable idiom for this piece of news. Fay Bentley had a quite long career in modelling, working with some of the finest designers in Paris, Milan and London. She started her career at the age of 21 in London.

However, as she started ageing she found it more difficult to leave the wished impact in her work. Due to this she decided to completely change career, and graduated as a civil engineer at the age of 27. She is currently working on sewage systems. Quite a jump from the cat walk to the toilet dumps.

Bus Strike: Finally Over
07.17.08 (11:46 pm)   [edit]

Finally some good news for the Maltese ... the Public Transport strike is over. The Malta Hearses Association have pulled out of the Transport Federation, after reaching agreement with Govt. representatives. This meant that the Transport Federation now had lost its reason to call a strike involving all public transport, remembering that the strike had been ordered due to the issuing of new hearses licenses.

Finally, Mr Spiteri (Head of the Transport Federation) has realized that he can't fight the inevitable - liberalization; and that in doing so he was only damaging the members of his federation. In fact, Dr Austin Gatt (Minister responsible for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications) communicated that he will now proceed faster in the road to liberalisation of public transport.

Taxi services have resumed normal work as from this evening. Busses will resume work as from tomorrow.

Malta Bus Strike: 16th July 2008 Updates
07.16.08 (8:49 am)   [edit]

17:07 - While Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was in Malta, the police managed to keep away the dirt of these islands from the airport, Valletta as well as the sea terminus.

13:25 - Mini bus drivers have blocked the link between Marsa and the airport.

13:05 - at least 16 passengers missed flights after being held up due to the transport strike. Do Bus drivers think that a flight ticket costs as low as their Bus ticket?

12:35 - Pirates of the road ... become pirates of the sea as they board ferries operating between Marsamxett and Sliema and force passengers to disembark.

11:35 - Apart from yesterday's 6 arrests, the police have made another 8 new arrests. Such a small number ... lock them all up!

10:55 - A traffic police who was re-directing traffic due to the road blocking carried out by the bossy operators on strike, was accidentally ran over by a civilian vehicle. From this blog - wishing the concerned traffic police a full and quick recovery.

10:35 - The SAG, Special Assignment Group, have been called on site as scuffles between savage strikers and the police broke out next to the Adolorata Cemetry. Can't you at least let the dead rest in peace?

10:17 - A coach driver who was transporting FISEC Game athletes was ordered off the bus, beaten by the transport operators and had the private coach's keys taken. No Swedish or Russians this time on the coach, huh?

10:00 - Some strike-participants lack in endurance as several taxi-drivers have started offering their services back to the public. Discordance is now present in the group. Let them battle out tihin themselves.

09:15 - Around 20 busses have decided to slow down traffic in Msida on the way to Valletta. Meanwhile, a coach full of language students and a tourists' double-decker where stuck in a carcade of busses elsewhere - the transport operators did not hit out at them as they did on previous days. Knowing by which head these people are ruled, I wonder whether they refrained from causing any damage as the vehicles contained Swedish girls ...

08:30 - The previous rumour has been confirmed; public transport workers have blocked roads in Sliema on Ghar id-Dud after holding noisy protests in St Julians. Let me literally translate Ghar id-Dud in English: Cave of Worms ... theses dudes on strike are currently playing home :)

07:44 - Busses, minivans and taxis have left the Valletta main terminus and St. Anne's Street in Floriana. They are planning an ambush in St Julians and Sliema. How can they possibly think of getting their enemy by surprise with their considerable size, loud engine noise, emission of large black clouds (due to illegally mixing petroleum with diesel in the carburetor),  and constant hooting of horns?

Malta Bus Strike: 15th July 2008 Updates
07.15.08 (10:30 am)   [edit]

In the above video, bus drivers assault Castille Palace ... the only problem is that the Prime Minister is currently on international duty - so Castille Palace is empty!!!!

18:30 - govt. officials declare that there will be no emergency service tomorrow due to the assaults by the lunatics on strike, making such a service dangerous. However a solution may be found to cope with burials scheduled for tomorrow.

18:13 - failed attempts have been made to restore parts of the public transport by the Govt. with 3rd parties.

16:30 - it has been revealed that during a meeting taking place around 2 months ago between the Govt. and the Transport Association, an increased subsidy by 81,000 Euros per month had been suggested alongside with restructuring of public services on the phasing of liberalization of the market. Are these people so retarded to disagree with a proposal put forward some 2 months ago? Where they living in cuckoo land and have suddenly woken up last Monday by any chance?

13:25 - meetings between Government officials and the public transport federation were terminated to no avail.

13:13 - finally the police have put a bunch of transport operators behind the bars after damaging private vehicles and tourist coaches. We'll soon be having a national zoo again :)

09:47 - the chaotic strikers terrorise tourists by stopping a double-decker they had boarded and removing its engine battery to stop it from continuing on its journey.

09:15 - the emergency bus service put in operation by the Government has been assaulted by the bunch of monkeys currently on strike. Windscreens were broken and keys were stolen, together with any bananas found on the vehicle.

07:30 - transport workers are blocking the Blata l-Bajda main road physically as they sit in the middle of the road.

Maltese Monkeys Decide to Strike
07.14.08 (6:04 pm)   [edit]

You can look all over the place, but you won't find a single monkey on the Maltese Islands (unless illegally kept). Oh sorry! But was watching the strike being carried out but by the Public Transport operators. Thought they were monkeys through the way they were "organizing" (a big LOL) their chaotic strike actions.

As the Government decided to liberalize the hearses market, their union called off all its members into a strike - including all the public bus service, mini-vans, taxis together with the hearses. Can't see the connection between hearses, which carry the dead, and the rest, which carry living people. But anyway, who am I to explain this concept to such intelligent people, the next-to-be Einsteins, making CERN envious of their highly technological vehicles ...

Here's the definition of strike: "to stop work in order to force an employer to comply with demands". Yeah of course, me and you we do understand that but it seems that the participants of the strike are unaware about its true definition. They decided to stop their service to public with a difference, still going out on the road and driving very slowly (opposite to their usual dangerous speed) on arterial roads without boarding any passengers. This creates a lot of traffic congestion. Not only are they not being of a service, but they are also being of a disservice and of a nuisance to the rest of the Maltese citizens.

Keep on showing us your shit! I'll post updates soon ...
